New Owner Anthony A. Labriola Enthusiastically Prepares to Carry on the Legacy of His Favorite Childhood Puppet Theatre
May, 2016 (Hicksville, NY) — Not everyone can say that they knew as a kid what they were going to do with the rest of their lives. For Anthony A. Labriola, however, this was a no-brainer. For over 10 years, Labriola has been working at the puppet theatre that he used to attend when he was young. Now, he hopes to continue his lifelong passion for storytelling as the new owner!
When Anthony A. Labriola was no older than 7, he attended his first show at the Long Island Puppet Theater. In 2005, when Labriola was 13, he returned to The Long Island Puppet Theater with his working papers in hand. Once he recieved a job, he worked side by side with former owners Roman and Eliza to learn the various art forms of puppetry from around the world and to create new and exciting shows, parties, and events.
After working on and off at the theater for almost 11 years, Labriola attended The School of Visual Arts with the hopes of combining his passion for film, puppetry, and ultimately, storytelling! Labriola’s hard work paid off when he graduated from SVA in the top 10 percent of his class with a BFA in film and television writing. “As much as the theater has shaped me, my education has played a major role in preparing me for this undertaking,” Labriola said of his time at SVA. Labriola then went on to pitch his own original content to major networks with some promising leads. Now, at 24 years old, Labriola is excited to say that he has become the owner of the very same theater that shaped so much of who he is today; the one and only Long Island Puppet Theater.
The Long Island Puppet Theatre now offers many different features, and is proud to announce that they will be holding numerous shows, such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Punch & Judy: Birthday Surprise!, and Peter Pan. On top of these shows, the theatre also offers numerous parties for special occasions, including a Princess and Prince Party, a Rock Star Party, a Super Hero Party, and more! Parents can even create a unique celebration experience for their kids, and with party favors such as inflatable guitars, hula hoops, candy, and face painting at the ready, the Long Island Puppet Theatre is clearly the ultimate place to go for any kind of special event! The theatre additionally provides a summer camp for schools, scouts, and other kid-friendly organizations. Here, kids can enjoy a dance & sing along, snacks, puppet shows, and more!
If puppetry is a personal interest, the Long Island Puppet Theatre even offers a website in which a custom puppet can be created. For a more hands-on experience, puppetry workshops are held at the theatre as well. The puppet workshops not only teach the craft of creating and working with puppet friends, but the interesting history of puppeteering!
Although The Long Island Puppet Theatre provides many features and events, the theatre has faced some difficult obstacles over the years that have prevented the theatre from reaching its full potential. The Long Island Puppet Theatre’s museum of puppets from around the world have been lost in a fire, and the established building is in need of an update. In Labriola’s efforts to maintain the theatre, he has created a “Go Fund Me” in hopes of bringing in new shows and events, and to restore the theatre. Through the help of others, Labriola will be able to modernize the venue to make the Long Island Puppet Theatre experience the best it can be!
With the anticipated grand re-opening scheduled for the second week in July 2016, the new Long Island Puppet Theatre will work hard to ensure that the art of storytelling inspires and entertains children for years to come!
